Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

If my husband’s ponytail was a person, it would be an adult, living on its own and probably partying with other ponytails.

Derek had a ponytail for 22 years. It’s possible his ponytail in person form would be a quiet university student who spent its nights studying but it’s not likely. You don’t tend to find a male ponytail on someone who’s quiet and reserved.

His ponytail was a big part of his persona. He tells some funny stories about riding his Harley without tying his hair back first and ending up looking like 1970’s Diana Ross. His hair is very curly and still almost all black. He has acquired a little bit of grey, but only since we’ve been married. (I have to admit that it’s true!)

After talking about it for months, on Friday we went to Veronica’s Hair Shop here in London and she cut that tail off.

A woman wearing a red top and white shorts holds Derek's ponytail up straight and aims her scissors at it while he looks cartoonishly frightened

This was all his idea. He said it was time for a change. I think it looks great.

Veronica and Derek smile for the camera. His curly hair is short now.

At one point Veronica, who has also known Derek a long time said, “You have a neck!” It’s true. That neck hasn’t been exposed in a long time. He’ll feel cooler now and it should be as easy to wash and wear as his long hair was. The ponytail will be made into a wig for a cancer patient.

I shot video of the main event, the cutting of the tail.

  1. LOOKS AMAZING!! And what a great thing to do re donating it. And the hair does not make a man; he can still be a long hair dude, just a “clean cut” version.
