Not a Fan

Yesterday I tweeted a question: does anyone know of a completely silent fan?  Not a radio fan, an actual fan.  My newsbooth is controlled by colleagues in another room who like it warm.  I like it cool. I would prefer the thermostat set to “meat locker” but I realize that’s not fair to everyone else.  The only suggestion I received was to spend $300 on a Dyson. Never again. Dyson once sucked me in.  He’s the inventor of the Dyson vacuum, you know, the one he says “doesn’t lose suction”.  Bullspit!    …

Working at It

If you were advising a young person about which field of work to get into, what would you say?  I’d probably suggest a trade like electrician or contractor. You make your own hours and you are as successful as you want to be. Our nephew is almost half-way through his electrical apprenticeship and he recently wired (with supervision) a new electrical panel in our house. His future looks bright. Pun intended.  …

My Book-to-be

It’s time for an update on my upcoming tome about the summer I spent working at a nudist resort.  Its title is The Naked Truth and it will be an ebook for Kindle (Amazon) and Kobo.  I want to put it through iBooks but I don’t have a Mac – a requirement to upload an ebook.  If I can find a good samaritan with a Mac, I’ll have access to the seller who owns the biggest market share.  …

New News Hub

Many weeks of intense effort have culminated in the launch of the new Blackburn News website.  It’s a regional hub combining the news-gathering efforts of all of the radio stations in the Blackburn chain; London, Windsor, Chatham, Sarnia, Leamington and Wingham.  If you follow one of those stations’ news departments on Twitter you’ve noticed the logo and name have changed to Blackburn (market).   …

En Route to Self-Publishing

Here’s where my little book currently stands:  It is about to be professionally edited.  This is a step that a lot of people skip and boy, does it show.  You simply cannot edit your own work with the same critical eye that someone else can give it.  It is not possible. I’ve been writing professionally for much more than a decade now and I don’t submit a thing without having another set of eyes look it over.  And when they find something and point it out, the piece always ends up better for it.    …

If Only They Knew Me

I wasn’t feeling well when we left for Michigan on Saturday morning. I had a headache and a mildly queasy tummy.   After we stopped at the Port Huron Cracker Barrel, where I had a bland breakfast of plain oatmeal with raisins, the queasiness turned into full-blown nausea.  I spent an hour of the trip with my seat reclined, under a blanket.   If only I had taken that as a sign of what was to come! …
