Derek put it best: “It was only a matter of time!”  We attended Hogtown Cycles’ first anniversary celebration and co-owner Mike casually said, check out the bike on the end. …
Smoking is bad for your health. We all know that. It’s gross to be around.  But my complaint about it has to do with some of the people  in my neighbourhood who have the habit whose smoke I never smell. And please keep in mind that the problem is exaggerated for entertainment purposes! I’m not out picking up garbage every day. But when I am, it’s related to smokers. …

For about 8 months I’ve been trying to get together with my friend Corinne, a buddy since high school, so she can cut my hair for my second half-century of life. …
I’ve slowed the ant invasion to a trickle. It hasn’t been easy. It involved a lot of poisonous bait inside and out and a few completely futile attempts at finding the colony. But the occasional industrious critter is still coming in so a pest control company will spray the entire house, inside and out, on Friday. …
We stayed at a Comfort Inn last weekend and we usually have a next-to-ideal experience for the dollar. It’s no Ritz but it’s clean, comfortable and in Newmarket’s case, freshly renovated. But there’s a trend I’ve noticed in these mid-range hotels and consider me unimpressed. Â …

We have friends who do a lot for our veterans. Â The CAV – Canadian Army Veterans – are a bunch of motorcycle riding veterans of Iraq and more recent conflicts who raise money for the WWII vets at our Parkwood Hospital here in London. Our friend who used to be the top commander in the Canadian Navy goes to Parkwood like Santa Claus every Christmas morning. Â …
Cutting the grass isn’t my favourite thing to do. Â I use the push mower in the front while Derek rides the tractor version on the back. Sometimes I can get him to take pity on me and run the tractor around the front, too. Â Still, we’re left with bunches of weeds or grass that doesn’t get cut along the garden and fence. Â And I dislike whipper-snipping more than grass cutting. Â It occurred to me that there had to be a better way. …

It’s been just over six months since the two of us, who had previously sworn off ever again succumbing to the charms of fur babies, threw caution to the wind and adopted Spice after I spotted him online at Animal Aide in St. Thomas. The other night I realized I didn’t know when our 11-year-old cat’s birthday was. Now I know that he is actually 12! …

One thing about buying a fixer-upper is that you can make it your own and make it better than you found it. There’s still a lot more to do here. Weeds are popping up in driveway cracks and most of the basement still looks like an episode of Hoarders: the Tool Edition. But we’re getting to it all in due time. …
