Does anyone else have the haunting strains of Zager and Evans’ only hit song in their head? 2025 is 500 years away from In the Year 2525, which went to #1 in 1969. But it can’t help but come to mind for those of us raised on pop music. This particular song was pretty dark so it cut through alongside peppy tunes of its time like Sugar, Sugar and I Can’t Get Next To You. (For a refresher, the video is at the end of this post.)

As 2024 comes to a close, I’m looking back at the year with gratitude. We keep a jar of “good things.” When something happens throughout the year we write it down and read them on New Year’s Eve. Otherwise, it’s easy to forget how much GOOD there was, even the small things, like finding a new recipe that’s a big hit.

I’ve always wanted to open a store. It’s an ongoing joke that I squirrel things away for the store that I don’t have! But I have culled my “inventory” down to the essentials since moving several times in the last five years or so.

There was a time when Toronto felt like my city. Now, it’s a place to visit and get the hell out of before crowds or traffic eat us alive. Still, Erin Davis and I had a good stay and play (well, she worked!) in TO this week.

My cohort of female workers, now referred to as Queenagers, endured an era of deep unfairness and company-fostered competition. We may not have been able to bust the glass ceiling, but we left our fingerprints all over it.

I’m not sure how many times I’ve been to Sidney, BC. Let’s say several. But this time was different. It was just as wonderful – perhaps more – than previous visits with my BFAPCAF (best friend a person could ask for!). Not just because of our Gracefully and Frankly Facebook Live. (Erin went behind the scenes HERE) But also because they have moved down the hill to the ocean’s edge

Erin and I don’t second-guess ourselves a lot when we record our Gracefully & Frankly podcast. We are in charge of our own contributions. In other words, if one of us wants to remove something, we do it. It doesn’t happen often but recently I asked her to edit something I said.

It’s tempting to just let go of my recent travel blips. They’re long over and I had a wonderful time with Erin Davis in Palm Springs & Palm Desert. Plenty of people have all sorts of frustrations with air travel that are much worse. But I will pursue refunds and there are a couple of parts of the adventure that still puzzle me.

I used to review events as part of my work in broadcasting. It was never comfortable. TV shows, movies – not so bad. But live productions that cost a lot of money? I had a hard time telling people to pay to see something I had seen for free. Unless I was completely blown away by it. And few things blew me away.
