Throwback Thursday – Book Launch Party

My first book was published in 2003. I really have no ties to Celebrity Tantrums anymore, and if you want to read it, I have a few dozen copies in my basement that I’d be happy to give away! I’m proud of the writing but my experience with this publisher wasn’t great. However, the book launch party was fantastic.  …

Blue Monday

This is it. It’s the third Monday in January, the day of the year when our emotions hit rock bottom and we’re at our most depressed. The idea is that the holidays are over and the flurry of activity suddenly stops. Christmas bills start coming in. It’s cold and the sun doesn’t want to show itself. If you’re feeling this way, you’ve got lots of company. Mental health experts estimate up to 10% of Canadians get the genuine winter blues. …

Review: Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who think Kathy Griffin is hilarious and those who don’t get her comedy at all. Count me in the first camp. The red-headed agitator’s latest book is a collection of awkward and funny encounters with some of the most famous people in showbiz.

Site Rules

For me, last week’s celebration and goodbye for Erin Davis was also a mini-reunion with many of my former colleagues. For more than three years – although it feels like the blink of an eye – I was the newscaster on the CHFI morning show and, for a time, filled in for Erin as cohost when she was on vacation. After I moved down the hall to 680 News, I still saw those great folks all the time.  …

A Beautiful Send-Off

Now that Erin Davis’ last CHFI morning show is over, her future is hers to create. She doesn’t feel like setting an alarm clock? She doesn’t have to. She doesn’t want to talk about tragedies in the news or what Adele is up to? She won’t. She can read/not read a newspaper when she wishes and choose how to spend her time. And that’s really what we all want. We might say we want wealth, but that’s only because wealth buys us freedom. Erin Davis, you’re free.

Throwback Thursday – Lights Alight

Ken and I were invited to join the official Lighting of the Lights at Victoria Park this year, as co-emcees with our colleague, CTV’s Nick Paparella. Nick has done it for so many years that we pretty much rode his coat tails through the program of live music and a couple of short speeches.

Throwback Thursday – Righting Some Wrongs

In 1989 I put a 45 on a dusty turntable in the FM102 music library and listened to a song called Soldier of Love. It was shipped without a label, purposely, so Music Directors wouldn’t be biased before they got a chance to hear it. I declared what I heard would be a hit song, It turned out that the artist was Donny Osmond. And that’s the one and only time I predicted a song would be a hit and was right!  …

Move Over, Chris

This week, Los Angeles became the latest American city to discuss replacing Christopher Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. Italian-Americans aren’t happy because they see ol’ Chris as an important part of their heritage. But what’s more important? Continuing to honour a man for discovering something that was already discovered, or celebrating the truth?   …

Nice Guy, Kevin Meaney

Kevin Meaney died last weekend. You may not know his name, but in stand-up comedy circles and among stand-up comedy nuts like me, he was a mainstay. Only 60, he was a favourite of Johnny Carson’s on The Tonight Show back when that was where comics got their big break. If Johnny invited you over to the couch, you became a star. Kevin always got to go to the couch.  …
