On a recent visit to my doctor, I heard the words that could either mean an emergency or nothing to worry about: “I have no idea what that is.” Lucky for me it was the latter.
I noticed a bump on the roof of my mouth that got bigger and then relaxed again by the time the appointment happened. My physician told me to go see my dentist, which I did. Not only did he say I’ve had it since birth, he called it a tori. Mine is smaller than depicted.
It’s totally harmless. It appears that I hurt it somehow, causing it to swell and become noticeable. Some people get rather large ones and they can even appear alongside the lower gums. They’re more common in women than men and dentists recommend just leaving them alone unless they interfere with eating. Or breathing. Thank goodness it’s only a tori and not a Kardashian.
