On Remembrance Day, Derek found some personal connections to the second world war. He found a photo album dedicated to his Dad’s experience in WWII, put together by his Aunt Barb, his Dad’s sister. What a treasure trove. Every letter Reg Botten wrote home is in there including the one he penned on the day the war ended. Auntie Barb even saved the papers from back home in Montreal on May 8, 1945.
There was a celebration when Derek’s Dad finally made it home safely a few months later.
A 100-year-old veteran said last week that he’s tired of hearing that there shouldn’t be any more wars. “War has been around for thousands of years”, he said. That’s true, sir, but with all due respect, and with immense gratitude for your service, that doesn’t make it worth doing again.
