Corned beef. It’s one of those things I’ve heard about all my life and never really stopped to think about. Beef that’s been…corned? What the hell!? It turns out that a lot of people don’t know details about this traditional Irish fare.
I’ve come to learn that there’s no corn involved in the making of corned beef.
Corned refers to a process of pouring corns or rocks of salt into a water-and-spices bath that the beef brisket soaks in for several days. It’s served in a traditional Irish dinner with boiled cabbage and potatoes, or in a Reuben sandwich. And it’s terrible for you. In addition to all of that salt, it has loads of fat. And no corn.
Mystery solved.Corned beef doesn’t come from cows fed only corn, or told corny jokes by a punny farmer. But now I can’t stop wondering about Cornish Hens.
