The Kardashians are selling a brand. I get that. They are prettier than us and richer than us and having more fun than us. Well, they were until Kim was bound and gagged and held hostage in her Paris hotel room while bandits relieved her of millions of dollars worth of jewellery. The incident is said to have changed her life. Let’s hope so.Â
You can’t possibly flash diamonds bigger than pieces of Lego on social media and not expect a bit of envy, and some criminal thoughts. She truly did bring it on herself. And the older I get, the sicker I feel about empty-headed celebrities flaunting their wealth while so many go without the basic needs of life. As a people, we could solve the problems of hunger and poverty, but we don’t have the will. Too many of us would rather lay on the couch and watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway came clean last week about why she was so miserable while promoting the movie, Les Miserables. She won an Oscar in 2013 for her portrayal of Fantine, the destitute sex worker whose illegitimite child, Cosette, is raised by Jean Valjean, the story’s hero. But she wasn’t happy about the attention. She told The Guardian:Â
“I felt wrong that I was standing there in a gown that cost more than some people are going to see in their lifetime, and winning an award for portraying pain that still felt very much a part of our collective experience as human beings.”
Hathaway receded from the public eye and now only works when she really wants to. Yes, she accepts millions of dollars in pay and still probably wears clothing that bears unbelievably high price tags. But at least she gets it. She doesn’t flaunt her engagement ring in everyone’s faces or brag about her lack of financial worries. She concentrates on her family and on trying to be a good person. Not a bad set of priorities there.Â
