This week, NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. burned up the Twitterverse with a post about his favourite sandwich. You remember Elvis’s ‘nana and peanut butter? Try banana and mayonaisse on white bread!
Dale’s 1.4 million followers went loopy. Many of them tried it and posted the results. TV sports commentators made the sandwich live on the air. All of the hoopla prompted Dale to later tweet, what’s more ridiculous, the sandwich, or the reaction to the sandwich?
One of my heroines of literature, bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, eats green olive and peanut butter sandwiches. But she’s not real so the sandwich doesn’t sound gross.
When we were kids, my brother would put anything in a sandwich if he thought it would make me squirm. My Mom was partial to cheddar and onion. My husband likes his toast buttered before it’s peanut-buttered. I know a woman who likes to press potato chips into her sandwiches – any kind – but I think that might be more about the crunchy texture than the taste.
I can’t think of a sandwich combination that I like, that’s unusual. Have you tried unlikely combinations together and found the holy grail of foods? I wanted to try Dale’s recipe but it just looks so unappealing and … white. It doesn’t please the eyes even though it might please the palate. I may never know.
