When I booked our trip to Iceland, it seemed such a long time off. But, as it tends to happen, it’s suddenly almost upon us. We leave later this month. But here’s the sticky-wicket we find ourselves in.
The flight to Iceland is an over-nighter. (This is why the trip cost about a nickel!) We arrive in the capital, Reykjavik, at about 6:30 am. Our hotel check-in time is 4 pm. What in the heck are we going to do when what we will really need, let’s face it, is a little nap?
The hotel says it will do its best to accomodate us but isn’t making any promises. This must happen to other travelers. We can rent lockers and use the Internet in a cafe and sight-see and take transporation and get something to eat – but we can’t lie down without looking like weirdos!
Just a brief, refreshing snooze is all I’m talking about. I don’t sleep on planes, although I might take a Gravol and see if it’s possible. Still, if we find ourselves totally weary, we’ll want a quick rest or even a shower to perk up again. Do you have any ideas, outside of dropping into a shelter or renting a room on top of the room we’ve rented? I know, I know, suck it up, you’re on vacation. And that’s likely what we’ll do. But I can’t imagine that there isn’t a solution, and I’m just not coming up with it. Can you?
You could check and see if the airport has shower facilities in an area other than the airline lounges.
That’s a great idea!
Don’t know if this is possible, what about a B&B? You almost needed to book your room for the previous day letting the hotel know you wouldn’t be arriving until the next morning and could immediately check in.
That’s a really good idea!
So, umm….just to recap, just so I’m sure I understand….you are taking a trip to Iceland. Beautiful, unique Iceland. Land of volcanoes and elves. Land of gender equality and raw puffin hearts. The land where every Saturday is officially Candy Day and there are no mosquitoes anywhere. Is that the Iceland you are referring to? Here’s a fix for your unspeakable hardship of staying awake, during the day, whilst exploring the aforementioned wonderland…….think about all of us back in the real world that are working and shadduppp!! Oh, and have fun.
I’d like to be alert enough to not, oh I don’t know, walk out in front of traffic or a puffin and get hit! But I smell what you’re cooking. Yes, it’s not a hardship. But it might be a reality.
I get EXACTLY what you’re talking about – you don’t want to start your trip off exhausted. We got to London UK at about 7 am one time and we booked ourselves on to a Thames cruise. We had a lot of time to kill so we rode the boat both ways…meant the commentator did his spiel the same, only in reverse order. Well, cut to us on the return trip down the Thames again – Rob, Lauren and I were asleep leaning on each other’s shoulders, and this poor guy was doing his best entertaining tour “stand up”. I felt bad for him (although I think we did tell him we’d just flown in, as we gave him a tip). That was our solution and we wish you one, too. A film festival perhaps! An immersive interactive Bjork experience! Maybe Valerie Geller could tweet the question – she has clients/friends everywhere over there. Bet you can’t wait! (Oh, and I have an Ativan or two if you need ’em. 😉 xo
You’re going public as my pusher?! THANKS!
