No Longer Free

Today is my last day at Free 981. I’m moving on to another radio adventure in London that I’m not at liberty to reveal yet. My colleagues and managers have known I’m going for a few weeks but out of respect for them, I chose not to say anything about it publicly until today.

Maybe it’s because I’ve made better decisions in recent years, but I find myself moving on with a heavy heart and a significant amount of sadness. I’m making the right decision, no question, but I am very comfortable at Free and I enjoy my colleagues. Earlier in my career I couldn’t wait to get out of one situation and into the next. Leaving 680 News in 2008 was the first time I was truly torn up about not being part of a team anymore. With no disrespect to my new employer, I feel like I’m leaving my heart behind and moving on with my head. With any luck, my heart will follow.

There have been many changes at Free since I started there as part of the original team that launched the brand new station in 2011. News is no longer a focus and, well, it’s time for me to take on a new challenge.

My supervisor, News Director Scott Kitching, is the most supportive boss I’ve ever had. He’s several shades of awesome and I will miss his dark, wicked sense of humour. Program Director Dan Wylie helped me grow as a broadcaster. Free 981 gave me the freedom to do a variety of things. While at Free I got to interview Terry Jones of Monty Python – a bucket list item – meet and chat with Tommy Shaw of Styx, sit beside Jay Buchanan of Rival Sons as he sang live on the air; I enjoyed so many great experiences.

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Blackburn Radio. Admittedly, it lacks a rigid corporate structure that puts a lot of checks and balances in place but that also leaves it free to be creative and to allow staff to have input. A little part of me will always cheer for Free 981, just don’t tell that to my new boss.

I designed my exit to incorporate a couple of weeks off. Smart, huh? My new position begins after the August long weekend. Until then, I’m taking those weeks to enjoy friends and family, take some time away from this space, do a road trip or two and find some true relaxation time. (Although I may not be able to resist posting a photo of our new deck!) I’ll look forward to sharing what I’ll be doing and where I’ll be doing it. Enjoy the rest of July, in a summer that’s already zipping past us way too quickly.

  1. Lisa, I’m sure you are making the right move. You have great instincts and good timing. Have a fun, relaxing 2 weeks; enjoy your deck and your time with Hubby. I can’t wait to hear where you’ll be hanging your hat next. You always seem to have fun at your workplaces, so they are fortunate to have you joining their team. All the best.
