Reversal of Apple Fortunes

As sick as I am of making mistakes with my iPhone keyboard, it looks like I’ll be staying with the house that Jobs built.

And it’s all because of the generosity of my friend Eric who decided to send me an iPad Mini. In fact, he sent it to me twice because the first time it went to my neighbour who doesn’t know my surname and got sent back. The round trip to Charlotte, NC took 31 days. But round two was quick and the Mini is now mine! It’s a lot of fun but its keyboard also has the same issue as the iPhone. (I blame the technology, not my fingers.) Enter the bluetooth iPad keyboard!

You simply set it in the cradle, pair the two pieces in settings and you’re typing like you’re on a laptop, only better. Because there’s no mouse, it still requires finger-swiping to open and close apps and such. But it’s terrific and will slowly replace my slow-moving, four-year-old laptop that has a crack in the casing and an attitude problem. “Laptop, please open this file?” Laptop: “Bite me! You haven’t cleaned my screen in three months!”

And here’s where I have to eat a little bit of crow. There’s no point in changing from an iPhone now that I can sync everything with the iPad and transfer back and forth. My dreams of a physical keyboard are over. But really, do I want to go to Blackberry after everything that’s happened? I don’t think I do. Perhaps I’m just thinking that way because of the iPad. That’s alright. One day I’ll be living in the woods, foraging for berries and I won’t have anything wired or wireless to concern myself with. Too much?

  1. I love my ipad mini too. Do you use the app “Flipp”? We price match from the flyers using it weekly so we don’t have to run around and we save quite a bit of money. I don’t have a smart phone so I use the store ‘s internet connection. I just wish it was compatible with my Samsung tv….

  2. Lisa, glad you found a technology solution you can live with, hey whatever works. Brenda, I think it is possible to have your Ipad talk to your Samsung TV depending on what your hoping to do.

  3. I was having a conversation just the other day with a friend, about my own dreams of a physical keyboard! I miss it terribly but my iPhone’s syncing and general simplicity wins out.

I think I accept that I’m at a point in my life (note: I didn’t say age!) where I need simplicity, as I don’t always have the time or desire to become an expert on tech stuff.

  4. The thing about smart phones today, are that they are more similar than different at which point it is simply personal preference to which you choose.

    1. My financial advisor won’t give up his Blackberry because he loves the physical keyboard but misses the cool apps. I have an iPhone and I absolutely hate the keyboard but I love the apps. They’re not perfect but they’re pretty cool.

  5. Thanks Allan. I wanted to screen mirror, and tried everything. Have concierge service from Costco, they couldn’t help. Called Samsung, they said doesn’t work; called Apple, they said not possible. The 2 brands are not compatible. I wish they would tell you up front. I think if I get Apple TV there’s a way around it, or to go with wires, but I wanted wireless…..I will keep on trying, appreciate the thought though.
