Annual Wanderlust

It happens every year: I get spring fever.

I’m certain I carry some form of nomadic DNA because once the weather warms up, I get the urge to throw off the shackles of everyday life and hit the road. At this point in my life, that would mean selling everything we own, buying an RV and driving west.

Design Sponge last week chronicled the reno of an RV by a couple who did just that. They liquidated their assets and embarked on a life on the road like turtles, with their house on their back or in this case, in the vehicle they rode in. They even have a cat that looks an awful lot like our Spice!

They took a dated but decent RV and customized it into a neat and beautiful living space that they’re never without. They’re in California right now, and going wherever their whims take them. I’m envious! All winter I dreamed about ways to scheme a dual US citizenship so I could move to Florida and escape winter. Now I’m day-dreaming about life on the road. Design Sponge prevents photo-sharing but if you’re at all interested, the reno details are HERE.  I like to look, and live vicariously.

  1. I’m with ya Lisa..my dream as well. I worked with a gal years ago and her and her husband did something similar..they sold their house, put their stuff in storage, bought an RV (no restoring involved), quit their jobs and toured all of Canada and the US. This was back in the day where jobs were plentiful and they knew they would not have a problem finding employment when they returned home. They also had no kids at the time. Boy would I love to do this too. Dare to dream.
    Happy Spring.

    1. I hear you Jean! The only problem would be on the return, you’re right. I suppose we couldn’t just travel indefinitely. Damn!

  2. Like you, I love the idea of trailering. My problem is being around other people! Don’t get me wrong: I enjoy our trips with listeners and being with friends. But it’s the people who slam doors and party in hotels, rev loud engines (boats, bikes, cars – you name it), play their music as loud as they want, haven’t taught their kids “indoor voices”, let their dogs bark and basically don’t even consider that other people share their space, that make moving from park to park intolerable. I cherish silence so much that I’m afraid inconsideration would have me driving the RV off a cliff within a month. (And I KNOW I sound 80!) How would you deal?

    1. Yeah I’m really not sure because all of those things would drive me crazy too! I guess headphones and music on my iPhone would come in handy. I’m really not sure. My concern is a pesky couple that insists we go to their trailer for hotdogs and potato salad when I just want to lie in bed and read! Some people see RVing as a totally social event. I’m more like you. And maybe I’ve watched too many movies with Randy Quaid in them!

  3. OK – the couple with the potato salad are what I’m afraid of, too. I know some people (one of my sisters) just LOVE this fellowship. I’m too much of a loner – um, thus the house on wheels, folks! Hmmm. Maybe we open a chain of trailer resorts just for loners. We’ll call it the “He was such a nice guy…kept to himself…we never thought he’d do something like that” Resort. Sound like a plan?
