On Monday we slathered a fresh coat of paint on the ol’ radio station. If you listen to radio, you know how often announcers say the call letters or slogan. Perhaps you can imagine how tricky it is to start saying something different all of a sudden. More on that in a moment.
Free-FM has played classic rock for two years but the problem is, we never said we play it. Our slogan from the start has been World Class Rock. It’s got a nice ring to it, but what does it mean? That’s what people told us. We know they want to find a classic rock station in London. It’s the obvious hole in the market when you consider all of the other offerings. So a new logo was designed and now we say what we are: Classic Rock Free 981. Reaction has been swift and positive. It was obviously the right move.
And believe me, we have it posted everywhere around the studio so we don’t forget. Beyond that, our afternoon host, Ryan, has set up a sort of swear jar where any announcer who messes up the slogan must deposit a loonie. When I left around noon Monday it only had one coin in it, and thankfully it wasn’t mine.
