Brandt’s Randt – No More Technology

I’ll surf the web on my smartphone, read a book on my Kobo, pay my bills on my desktop but there’s one technological advancement I won’t accept. I’m drawing the line! And so I randt.

  1. I guess I should add that the native iPhone Maps app needs an available data connection to download the maps on the fly but there are apps from Tom Tom and Garmin that use preloaded maps and, therefore, don’t require a data connection. You just have to had the forethought – and space – to load the appropriate maps.

  2. Well there you go. Thanks Cavan! Now I can have the best of both worlds. I already know that Google maps will send me to Alaska by way of Texas.

  3. You can get a GPS receiver which will connect to your smart phone via Bluetooth and with associated GPS software package TomTom or whatever you have a completely portable system. Although smart phones use GPS it is mainly for locating the next or nearest cell tower not for travel however this is changing with some newer smart phones.

  4. My son, who is legally blind, replaced his standalone GPS with an iPhone several years ago. Personally, I’m an Android guy, and have been using my phone as a navigation system since the Google Nexus One. I did have an HTC Tytan a few years before that and, while it was a great GPS, it was a horrible phone.

    1. I do have a map app that works like a GPS. The problem with using it on a bike is, you have to stop frequently, so I may as well just use a map. The advantage of a GPS on the handlebars is being able to keep moving! But anything less than about $700 isn’t worth it. So, map it is. (I’m also not an iPhone fan, even though I’ve had one for years! The keyboard still gives me lots of grief.)
