The story of Joe has captured the hearts of animal lovers in southwestern Ontario. Some dirtbag shot the sweet little kitty with a pellet gun and he was found on the side of a road near death with 17 pellets in his head. Last week Sarnia Police arrested a 19-year-old man for the crime. But the story is about Joe.
At last check nearly $18,000 in donations had come in for the surgery to remove the pellets. The operation cost between $2-4,000 and was successful although one pesky pellet had to be left in Joe’s head. Hundreds of people have offered to adopt the little survivor and the rest of the donated funds will go toward helping other felines at the SPCA.
I think many people live in a dream world with an invisible bubble around them. It actually saddens me that it takes this kind of drama to draw out so many folks who can obviously spare some cash and make room in their home for a little life. Hundreds if not thousands of cats are put down every year due to overcrowding. Where are those people then? Only one can adopt Joe. Will the others save a different kitty life or will they shrug and say, if I can’t have the one with the great story, forget it?
The need is always there. I suppose it’s a good thing that people respond in a crisis but it’s disappointing to me that a crisis is what it takes.
Thank you so much for mentioning the blight of so many unwanted cats. I am in cat rescue in Toronto, and while we have made great strides in the past few years in this City, the problem remains. Spay and neuter your pet!!!!! And if you cannot adopt, consider donating some time or money to a cat rescue.
I just… don’t… understand…
What makes humans want to inflict such pain and cruelty to another living creature, a defensless one, no less? What goes through peoples heads? The kid who shot the pellets is just as low as Michael Vick.
I know this post is about the kitty, and I have 2 rescues of my own. I truly want to see every fur critter get a good home, I can only hope the case of this cat wasn’t an adoption gone wrong. :'(
Pets are not toys. Joanne is right… please spay & neuter.
I will follow the case as it works its way through the system. I hope to get some answers too and I will share them here.
