Brandt’s Randt – An Old Song Sung New

This will be a familiar topic for regular readers. I tried to rehab myself, I really did! But I can’t get over it. I see it everywhere and it’s so irritating. So I randt.

  1. Yes, yes, a thousand times YES.

How about you track down the person who’s convincing everyone to apostrophe everything, and I’ll track down whoever is convincing people that “quotation marks” can “acceptably” be used when you want to “emphasize” something.

    “Facepalm.”

  2. A number of years ago, at a time when I was consuming massive amounts of Coca-Cola, I was fond of telling those who offered me ice that “the Coca-Cola company has spent a fortune getting this just right and you can’t make it better by adding water.”

In an email to a friend, my signature included my, then new, tagline “Committed to your success – our’s depends on it”. Traci responded: Cavan, “ours” is possessive and you can’t make it more possessive by adding an apostrophe.

I’ve never made that particular mistake again.

    1. Because your friend got through to you, I’m wondering whether I should tell this professional who made the latest error that she does it regularly. I don’t want to be her school-marm. But she did send me a note yesterday with an apostrophe in the word lots – as it lots of time. I can’t even bear to repeat the error here…
