D-Day Activity

We have friends who do a lot for our veterans.  The CAV – Canadian Army Veterans – are a bunch of motorcycle riding veterans of Iraq and more recent conflicts who raise money for the WWII vets at our Parkwood Hospital here in London. Our friend who used to be the top commander in the Canadian Navy goes to Parkwood like Santa Claus every Christmas morning.

Hubby’s father spent the last few months of his life in Parkwood. He served in the Signal Corp and we have his uniform, boots and other mementos of his time in the army.

Yesterday was the 69th anniversary of D-Day. And on that day, Parkwood Vets who are in arts programs sell their wares and get to keep whatever they make. This year I thought I’d go see what it was all about.  I’ve been to Parkwood many times but I’d never been inside.

They took cash only and I wish I had brought more of it with me!  I didn’t know what to expect but after winding my way down the lower level, following well-positioned signs to the Art Show, I passed the artist studios with their open doors and invitations to “come on in”!  It was an open house.  One large room was filled with the proceeds of the veterans’ time.

Ceramics were two-for-one.  Beautifully, tastefully decorated display plates were $8.  Flower pots, $6. Throw cushions, between $6 and $14 dollars. Silk scarves, hand-made greeting cards, leather goods – there was some really nice stuff.

I came away with a couple of cards, vowing to go back next year and make a bigger dent in my personal wealth!  This supports veterans who are here now and doing something they’re passionate about.  As I watched people mill about and shop my heart felt like the Grinch’s – three sizes bigger.  Thank you gentlemen for all you have done and all you do.
