The ways of a kitty-cat are not entirely unfamiliar to me. My previous cat, the wonderful Stan, hid in the closet when we moved, didn’t sit on my lap until we had him nearly 2 years and loved to rat-a-tat-tat his clawless front paws on the dog’s head. He was a curious little personality and much-loved. But when it came to bedtime, Stan would rather curl up in an upholstered chair than go anywhere near the humans.
Not Spice. Spice is a bed cat. He loves nap time and loves it even more if he can sleep on your outstretched hand. For the first few weeks we had him, he would scoot out of the room as soon as we were finished reading and the lights went out. A few times he almost flew out in the middle of the night when one of us rolled over and surprised him. But those days are gone. This week I’ve woken up every morning with the cat on my head. Well, more like around my head, like one of those Russian fur hats with ear flaps. It appears that sometime in the dead of night, Spice is crawling up to the top of my pillow and positioning himself on my noggin. I wake up with his front legs down the right side of my face, his back legs beside the left side and his purring, furry body draped over the top of my head. I can only assume that he locks into that position when I roll onto my back because I normally sleep most of the night on my side. Not any more!
In addition to being a bit odd I’m wondering (and hoping) if this is just another one of his temporary phases? My fondest wish is that he will decide that acting as a live wig is not his favourite thing to do, and find another place to spend the night. But it’s been 4 days and he doesn’t move until I actually get up. He seems quite comfortable. I’m mildly weirded out. I suppose there’s no harm in it but my hair sure was flat this morning. And I couldn’t leave the house until I picked out the little white cat-hairs that were sticking up in my part. Any and all opinions are welcome, thanks.
If your objective is to find a way to prevent your dear kitty cat from sleeping on your head, sorry never having had a cat I never had to find a solution either. However if your objective is to solve the problem of cat hair mixed in with yours, then my first suggestion would be to try wearing a shower cap to bed. This has the potential for keeping cat hair from mixing with yours and an outside potential of making your cats sleeping area no longer enjoyable. There is one possible down fall to this suggestion, and that is your dear kitty cat might try scratching at the cap to remove it, an undesirable result.
One of our cats LOVES to sleep on the bed too! Fidget will sleep on top of Dan’s back, and if he rolls over, she does a log roll move, and lies back down on his side or stomach or whatever. 🙂
That’s funny! Spice is a little less easy-going about the roll-over. Funny thing though. The minute I put up a blog post about his head-sleeping ways, he stopped. He still wakes me in the middle of the night with his face pressed into mine, breathing cat breath on me. But it’s cute.
