We ask all of the usual questions in the wake of yesterday’s mass shooting at a Connecticut school: Why did this happen? How can it possibly have happened again? Why would anyone execute innocent children – or anybody at all? And when will Americans finally realize that the right to bear arms is at the heart of these horrific incidents? Â
Someone put it this way on Twitter: We are at the mercy of each other. Â And it’s true. Â A person you don’t even know can end up doing something incredibly stupid that harms you. And a person who goes on a crazed rampage can devastate a town and change hundreds of lives forever. It’s a helpless feeling, isn’t it?
There are too many people with guns in their homes. Â There are too many people with undiagnosed and untreated mental health problems. It’s a dangerous combination. And our hearts are broken, again.
Lisa, honest to God I don’t know what to say/do about this on the air tomorrow. Not that it’s about ME in any way, but I have to confess that my anger has far overshadowed the sorrow I know should be foremost in what I’m feeling about these poor children and their dedicated, heroic teachers. Why can the whole world see what’s wrong with their gun-mad culture, but within their borders so many Americans continue to post and yell about their constitutional rights to bear arms (muskets, that is, as per the timing of the 2nd Amendment)? What about a constitutional right to pick up your children from school, from a mall, from a temple, from a movie alive? Is this finally the tipping point? Can anyone say it’s not the time to talk about it at long last? Or at the very least, table a bill limiting or abolishing assault weapons?! Sorry – more questions. And yes, immeasurable heartbreak. E
I know that something will come to you. It’s a tough one to comment on. So many people are trying and failing! (Witness Facebook and Twitter) But maybe that’s part of the story.
