Two aspects of human life puzzle me: Killing purely for sport and eating any type of meat a person can get their hands on.
Hunters who actually eat the deer and turkeys they shoot are one thing. Those that go out stalking bears for fun are quite another and those who can’t wait to throw any and everything on a spit make my head hurt.
These thoughts were inspired by the annual Squirrel Cook-0ff in Arkansas. Yes, it’s Arkansas and the winning squirrel meat recipe was squirrel sliders. Squirrel jalapeno poppers – runner up. But it brought back a memory of walking past a Burlington restaurant years ago whose posted menu bragged it was now serving alligator. Why? Aren’t cows and chickens and pigs and lambs enough? I won’t even set foot in a place that serves rabbit. Bunnies are for admiring in the back yard and naming, as pets. It just escapes me how some people are driven to eat the meat of any creature they haven’t eaten before. It’s not hunger. It’s more than curiosity. Is it some sort of primal need to dominate other creatures by consuming them? If you know what it is, please let me know!
