London’s annual Western Fair is on. It’s a 10-day extravaganza much like the CNE but appropriately sized for this area. For us, it’s huge. And every year they offer a different deep-fried delight and Derek and I believe it is our duty to try it.
This year they held a contest to find the tastiest deep-fried treat. The winner: wagon wheels. They were a lunchtime staple when I was a kid. They’re chocolate covered soft cookie-like things with chocolate layers and a white filling. Now imagine all of that dipped in batter and then fried in boiling fat! The runner up was the deep-fried butter tart. When we arrived at the booth we couldn’t decide so the girl made us a deal. Instead of two butter tarts for $4 she would give us a tart and a wheel for the same price. It was a slow time, she was being resourceful. We bit.
Then came the dilemma. What to try first? We thought we were trying the butter tart and quickly pronounced the wagon wheel the winner. But upon closer inspection it became apparent that we had mixed up our treats. The butter tart was the clear winner despite being the contest’s runner up.
At first you think, can we really finish this? I mean, he just ate a small bucket (seriously, with a handle) of poutine and I had chicken on a stick. But in the words of the great philosopher Larry the Cable Guy, “Git er done!”
I couldn’t eat like this very often. Not only because I would soon have to wear my bathrobe to work but also because of the way it makes me feel. We ate an apple when we got home just to remind our bodies that we love them. Thank you Western Fair. See you in a year!
I think it’s great that you guys make it your duty to try new foods, even if they aren’t the healthiest dishes. 🙂 Love it!
Meanwhile I keep reading your posts about how fit and healthy you’re getting. If you’re still losing weight, I’m finding it :p
