And how did you spend your weekend?
This was our first weekend at home, together, without work or other obligations, since sometime in May. Derek worked on preparing the garage for electrification while I worked on my chest-of-drawers project. It involved painting, decoupaging Beatles song sheets and antiquing a salvaged dresser. You can see the “before” here: http://lisabrandt.ca/wordpress/2012/07/24/what-do-these-things-have-in-common/ And now, the after:
If you’re disappointed just imagine how I feel!
When I left the glued-on papers Saturday evening they were perfect. There wasn’t an air bubble or a crease. It looked wonderful.
But when I woke up Sunday morning I was horrified to find that big bubbles had formed under almost every sheet. It couldn’t be salvaged so I thought I would start the gluing process over. But as I attempted to peel up the paper, the paint came away with it and I found myself on the verge of a hissy fit. I asked Derek to drag the thing to the curb but he took it to the garage instead and I’m glad he did because once I get over my frustration, I’ll be willing to scrape off the paper and do a plain, ol’ paint finish on the thing.
I still think the idea was a good one. It came from a weekend projects book that House and Home magazine put out a few years ago. They used random sheet music. I chose to go with only The Beatles. Although I followed their instructions to the letter I’m wondering now if maybe their sheet music paper was thicker because I felt at the time that the glue was a little too runny. I think the paper stretched a bit and then contracted. This is only a guess.
I wish I could have shown you a future family heirloom but it was not meant to be! I almost went out and bought a dresser on Sunday, just out of sheer frustration. That’s never a good attitude to shop with and I’m glad I resisted. Derek will do a little Derek magic and I’ll do a little Lisa magic and we’ll make this thing work. Just..not today.
Where’s Maxwell’s Silver Hammer when you need one? I can’t imagine your frustration but am so glad you may take another shot at it. You’re my hero for even trying something so daunting.
Had Maxwell’s hammer been handy I think the dresser would have been reduced to kindling! 🙂
