We just lost Donna Summer and now, Robin Gibb. If you grew up in the 70’s you know that The Bee Gees were cool to a lot of people and then they became uncool. They never lost their cool for me. I was a fan in the 1970’s, loved them through the 80’s and ever since. In 1991 I was the only music-related industry type in Canada to tell the magazine The Record that the Bee Gees’ High Civilization was on my top 10 albums of the year.
The brothers Gibb band ended with the death of Maurice in 2003. Now that Robin has also died there’s nothing left but the music. Say what you will and mock it all you like, some of us have never been without a vinyl copy, a cassette, CD or MP3 of Bee Gees music to mix in with the rock and the country and whatever else turns our crank. They were destined to make a permanent mark on the world of music as soon as Barry discovered his falsetto. In the 60’s, Robin was the group’s lead singer. He even went solo at one point. Barry got all the glory for his good looks and being out front but Robin was a huge talent too.
I’ve always loved this song: You Win Again.
