What makes a show become a hit? Gee if I could answer that I’d be a squillionaire. American Idol is back in full 11th season swing and we’re watching again although viewership across the continent is down. For the first time, the musical monolith was beaten by the Big Bang Theory. Up until this season I could never really explain why we enjoyed the show so much. Oh it’s fun to see such amazing talent arrive in such little, inexperienced packages and it’s a hoot to root for the ones we like even though Canadians can’t cast a vote for them. But then it hit me. We are these guys.
We’re Statler and Waldorf from The Muppet Show! We’re the crusty old farts who like to sit back and shout our critiques at the television. We critique the judges, we critique the hosts, we critique the singers. Since the show went “live” with its performances this week we’ve mostly been critiquing the sound mix. (Is anyone else finding it muddy and the vocals, buried?)
So like our namesakes above we will continue to prattle away, make each other laugh with our observations and form strong and loud opinions with no actual effect on the outcome of the show. Just like Statler and Waldorf. Better than Oscar the Grouch and Animal, I suppose.
