Oh how we love our new Kobo readers!
I always said I was the kind of person who liked to hold an actual book in her hand and wasn’t interested in getting one of those fancy-pants new ereaders. And then I read Stephen King’s massive hardcover 22.11.63 and the wisdom of a light little electronic reading machine suddenly appeared like a carpal tunnel cure in the night! I did a lot of online research, read a zillion reviews of all of the ereaders and settled on the Kobo for a variety of reasons. In the protective case I chose it even opens like a book and feels like a book.
I love books but our shelves are overflowing and we have hundreds of them packed away. I also love being practical and the Kobo is perfect for any kind of travel. It can hold more than a thousand books and it never gets any heavier! Plus, they’re cheaper. Kobo keeps sending us discount coupons. We share an account so we can both have any book we buy. For example, we bought Jann Arden’s memoir Falling Backwards for $8. The list price for the hardcover is $32! And we still get the cover art and everything else. We just don’t have to find room to store it when we’re through.
The screen isn’t back-lit so it emulates a book as much as possible and it’s easy on the eyes. You flip pages with the sweep of a finger, check the definition of a word with the tap of a finger and there are many, many more features that make it a great experience to use. We’ve been converted. Pretty good for a couple of old farts who love the feeling of real books, eh?
Lisa, you should check out your public library as most of them now offer the availabilty to download books (both audio & text). It is just like taking out a book but you can do it from the comfort of your own home and most return automatically after two weeks.
That’s a great feature. I’ll check it out!
