The last time I bought a pair of glasses that were specially made for my own peepers was about 4 years ago.
Somehow during my move to London 3 years ago, I misplaced the glasses. They had cost around $800 and had progressive lenses. I can see 20/20 long range so the tops of the lenses were just glass. Then they morphed into my reading lens, which is a pretty mild prescription. They had been specially set up for my workspace at 680 News and that was the only place I could wear them comfortably.
Recently I found them in their hiding spot; under the passenger seat of the Xtrail. I had dropped my parking pass and needed to conduct a thorough search of my vehicle or they would still be there. They don’t work for me anymore because I don’t have the same set-up anywhere that I had at 680. My prescription hasn’t changed though. This I know because I just had my eyes tested again. And I was a little taken aback that the eye doctor agreed I can get along just fine with readers from Costco or a drug store or wherever I’d like to buy them. Good thing too because the lenses they priced out for me were, again, in the 6-700 dollar range and that just seems whacked to me. Still, she tried to gently convince me that I should be going for progressives because “you’ll have to get used to them eventually and you may as well start now.”
Is that all you’ve got? Seems to me that having perfect long range vision, the only issue I’ll have with wearing readers is that I need to slide them down my nose or take them off when I’m talking to someone or driving or doing anything but reading or using the computer. So? What do I care? Occasionally I’ve been gently mocked for looking over my glasses to talk to someone at work and frankly Scarlett, I don’t give a damn!! I don’t have to look at me!
Let’s see. Costco readers are $25 for a pack of 3 and they come in funky frames and have been holding up well for years. Or I could spend $700 or more and get just one pair that I’d have to haul around with me all the time and the only benefit is I wouldn’t have to take them off. No contest. Costco it is!
