I’m late posting a blog today because I got a little off schedule. I was up at 6:15 making breakfast for my wonderful brother who arrived very early to bring his electric, heated vest to lend to Derek , who is off on another motorcycle trip – but this one isn’t exactly a pleasure cruise!
He and Thane Siliker, aka Iron Butt (an official title for crossing Canada non-stop, the fastest, on a motorcycle) are heading to Labrador to not only ride the newly finished highway but to film a documentary about what it’s like to take the trip. The last segment of the road that allows a rider to circle Labrador has finally opened and although they call it a highway, a lot of it is rough, gravel road. Still, you no longer have to take a ferry for part of the trip. It’s two wheels all the way.
Adventure riders will want to take this route simply because it’s there and research is key. That’s where the documentary comes in. Derek and Thane (and their other partner in TV production) will show the realities of the drive, how to prepare and what to expect. It’s hard riding and unforgiving terrain in some spots. They had even considered camping along the way but it turns out that’s not necessary. This is Derek’s bike and as you can see the seat and the contruction do not offer the comforts of his Harley. A warm bed and a hot shower will be necessities, not luxiries, after a day on this bad boy!
This trip has been in the planning stages for about a year. It’s going to be a big adventure and a challenge but they’re up to it. You can read more about them and the trip at their website: www.adventurousmedia.com
