Above the Law
The headline read, “VP Pence supports Trump Administration’s Decision to Bar US Embassies From Flying Pride Flags”. My first thought was, that’s not even news.

…CJBK morning co-host Loreena Dickson got married on the weekend. She invited the CJBK morning crew to the reception and I’m so grateful that I was included, despite being an ex-crew member.
…If ever you think life is predictable and boring, consider the case of Derek and Lisa. They were friends long ago and far away. And then they weren’t. That estrangement lasted for a long time and was considered permanent. Their lives took separate, disconnected paths for many years. …
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve been to Las Vegas. I went to the old Vegas three times, before the mega-resorts and resort fees and insanely-sized hotels were erected. I vividly remember waiting in the limo with my Dad before we left for the airport. We were watching the cranes and other signs of construction that would eventually completely change The Strip and the city as we knew it. Dad said, “We won’t recognize this place next time we come back”. He didn’t go back, as far as I know, but I did and he was right. It was unrecognizable. …
The Ken and Lisa Morning Show pitched a contest idea some time ago: a wedding vow renewal. We’d choose a couple and give them a CJBK Wedding Do-Over. Mary and Fred’s entry was selected some time ago, and their mini-wedding was held last Wednesday evening. It was wonderful! We selected a couple whose first wedding had a lot of mishaps including a lost ring and no money for a honeymoon. It also happens to be their fiftieth anniversary year. …
I’m pretty sure I’ve never written a mushy Valentine’s Day post. And I’m not about to start! But today is the most wonderful of all fake holidays. Chocolate will be eaten. Hallmark will get richer. Single people will grumble or ignore the day, and rightly so. One day someone will sue Lindt because their heart-shaped boxes are exclusionary, or they feel shamed by the “couple’s special” at their favourite restaurant. (I’ll bet it happens!)Â …
It’s not really fair to compare our Las Vegas wedding to a wedding with invitations and guests and centrepieces, except that we were ahead of the trend on something important: customization. These days, brides and grooms are realizing that they can have a service that’s as long or as short as they want, and have it contain what they want, instead of taking a cookie-cutter ceremony from someone who simply inserts their name into the wording. Our friend Laurie is now an ordained Minister and that’s her niche: officiating customized, non-denominational weddings. …
Derek and I don’t make public declarations about our relationship. Occasionally, there’ll be a compliment or a jokingly sarcastic comment on social media, but that’s mostly meant to entertain. Whatever we think or feel about each other tends to stay between us. …
The only daughter of our very dear friends got married on the weekend. This event has been long in the planning and heavy in anticipation. And it was a very special, wonderful day. Â Â …
After 14 years together Derek’s cousin Kim, whom we adore, and her wonderful partner Jeff, tied the knot. …
Last weekend I attended a wedding reception for a couple whose ceremony was held in February in the Dominican Republic. Â I wasn’t even invited to the party! Â The groom, Zack, is my cousin’s son. Â I went as the plus one of another cousin in the family. It was like sneaking into a secret society where I knew everyone. Â …
