Sipping Sangria
Make mine a virgin, but I’ll still raise a glass to a couple of wonderful women who host the podcast: Moms Sipping Sangria.

…Derek and I sing. A lot. Not that anybody asks us to. I sing more than he does but not necessarily better. We experience life in music. By that I mean, we turn everyday events into songs.
…Discussing frivolous things right now seems wrong. Serious, important issues are at the forefront and I’m definitely taking part in those conversations. But sometimes, you need a mental break. Whether it’s turning off social media, or talking about the weather, or what have you. In that spirit, I want to share a little happy, silly, but satisfying occurence in my life! And it’s all about a song.
…This week of flashbacks to my most-read posts comes to an end as I am no doubt searching for my slotted spoon and other necessities. And next week, I’m beginning a new blogging schedule and Miss Sugar moves to a new date. (HINT: there won’t be a fresh post on Monday. It’s all three-day weekends from now on, around here!)
…Leaving CJBK, and radio, took a lot of time to decide on. Except for a couple of brief instances here and there, for more than 30 years I’d always had a full-time, steady paycheque-with-benefits kind of job. Did I have what it took to be an entrepreneur?
…Our favourite show on CBC radio is, without a doubt, Under the Influence with Terry O’Reilly. It used to be called Age of Persuasion. In a recent rerun (the show is on summer hiatus) Terry told a story that was so moving and well, influential, I’m going to paraphrase for you.
…Derek reminds me that water levels in Lake Huron have been so low (how low were they?) that the marina in Bayfield had to be dredged so boats didn’t scrape the lake floor. That’s certainly not the case now.
…Recently, as I scrolled through the headlines on news websites, regrets appeared in several headlines. They happened to involve celebrities but they’re certainly not particular to the famous.
…Until I started working for myself, I always worked for traditional companies with fat HR do-and-don’t binders and strict rules. Truth is, I kind of like rules. When parameters are set you know just how far you can push. The motto, “Beg forgiveness, don’t ask permission” works well in this environment, especially where creativity is involved.
…I don’t know Gerry Forbes well. We crossed paths professionally a couple of times and had lunch once, with another colleague. It was his brother, Marty, who got me out of Wingham by hiring me at CKFM (soon to become MIX 999, now Virgin) nearly – gulp – three decades ago. I don’t know Marty well, either. He left pretty soon after hiring me, but I chose not to take that personally!
…CJBK morning co-host Loreena Dickson got married on the weekend. She invited the CJBK morning crew to the reception and I’m so grateful that I was included, despite being an ex-crew member.
…Watching the mutual support between Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga reminds me of so many times in radio when that wasn’t the case for me. It’s clear that Cooper and Gaga have true affection for each other. The cold, hard fact is, they’re promoting a movie, but they’re doing it with grace and admiration. When you find that in broadcasting, it’s rare, as I’m sure my radio colleagues will testify.
…Last week, we had lunch with a former radio colleague I hadn’t seen in (gulp) more than thirty years.
…Maybe it happened before I played Becky Thatcher in our grade 8 production of the musical, Tom Sawyer. But if it did, I can’t pinpoint the moment. …

There’s no question about it, I’m going to miss Ken Eastwood. He’s a great on air partner, a good guy and a hell of a baker and cook. Stephanie Vivier starts with him tomorrow on CJBK. Today, for me, it’s about looking back. …
When we last left our intrepid broadcaster, she had purchased a home in Wallaceburg and put her London house up for sale. Her husband and cat have been clearing out and packing. (Husband more than cat.) We learned that the new home isn’t commuting distance to the current job. And now, with apologies to Paul Harvey, here’s…the rest…of the story.
…
In the past week, several instances have arisen that made me want to make in-your-face recommendations for my book about media and PR. I resisted, of course, but the reasons why I wrote it keep piling up and people working in media keep sending me more examples. I don’t even have to try to prove that it’s needed! The proof comes to me.

We read stories about people quitting work by doing something outlandish and think, OMG, I could NEVER. Around the time I quit MIX/CFRB there were much bigger and bolder exits from broadcasting. One used their airtime to lambaste their boss and company owner. Another tossed his headphones and walked out. One of my exits became a bit of a folk-tale and over the years it has come back to me with the details all wrong. …
