Old Friends Acting Our Age

Derek has a weekly breakfast with a bunch of guys he’s known since high school. One of them just had a pacemaker installed. Another, an emergency appendectomy. Still another will have to lie face down for weeks – WEEKS – after eye surgery to repair a detached retina. Four people we know have COVID-19. And all of this happened within the last week.

Have you ever had something in your life that felt so big and overwhelming, that the thought of talking about it made you feel like you might explode? Of course you have. We all have. And that’s what this post is about. It’s the reason why I haven’t broached the subject here, or on our Gracefully and Frankly podcast, or with anyone except those closest to me, and one nice woman I recently met.

Last week, I watched a TikTok video on repeat and laughed out loud each time. Someone I know had shared it to Instagram. Be warned: the language is Not Safe For Work. But somehow, when harsh words are coming out of an Annoyed Lemon, it’s hilarious.

Keeping it Real

Everyone needs to really think about what quality of life means to them. But not everyone will actually do it. It’s one of those things that people too often put off and then leave their loved ones wondering. My Dad, thankfully, was clear and consistent in what he did and didn’t want. No heroics. No feeding tubes, no life support, no resuscitation.
