Mother’s Day Musing
Sunday is Mother’s Day. Around here, it’s just Sunday.

…Toronto radio legend Don Daynard has passed away. His story isn’t mine to tell. If it’s anyone’s, it’s Erin Davis’s, and she’ll do so in her Monday vlog at erindavis.com.
…This is an unusual entry. It starts kind of crummy but ends well. And in order to make that happen, I have to tell the story of my recent trip from end to beginning.
…As you read this I will either be in flight, or hanging out at an airport.

I feel like a new butterfly, wriggling out of my covering after hanging upside down as a pupa for a long time. Allow me to explain.
…We talked about it a hundred times. We’ve been teasing about it via social media. And finally, a podcast featuring Erin Davis and me is out for the world to hear. Gracefully and Frankly, episode one HERE.
…My ride-or-die Erin had some professional engagements in the GTA last week. After joining her for her appearance on CTV’s The Social (which I watched from the green room), I brought her back for a few low-key days in Port Stanley. She’d never been here, and I was so excited to show her our home turf.
…Yes, this is the unofficial end of summer. Kids back in school. Summer-only activities rolled up like so many yoga mats. But as a woman who puts her faith in science, I’m sticking to September 22 as the last day of summer. That’s still several days from now. (I’m not a woman of math!)
…I started a handful of blog posts to publish today.
…Heading to BC last week was a risk, some said. It’s too soon to fly, too difficult to maintain social distance. Too peopley. I get that perspective. We’ve been staying away from each other for so long, it’s difficult to know when it’s okay to resume some normalcy. Last week was “okay” for me, regardless of what anyone else thought.
…I try to set goals for a new year. Sometimes I reach them, sometimes I don’t. But I want to get fit. Really, I do. I think about it every day.

Father has been ill with a virus – not the one that’s been grabbing international headlines and causing worry. No, my extra-special human contracted a boring old strep throat virus. Sadly for me, he bounced back quickly. I don’t wish illness on him but the math is simple: Ailing Father + rest time = more opportunities to pet me. I really don’t see where the problem is.
…My reading relationship with Malcolm Gladwell started with The Tipping Point in 2000. It continued with Blink (2005), Outliers (2008) and What the Dog Saw (2009). David and Goliath came out in 2013. And now, Talking to Strangers. You might say I’m a fan of his work.
…If you’re old enough, you might recognize today’s title as a song lyric from the 1972 soft rock hit, It Never Rains in Southern California. Albert Hammond wrote and sang it. And if you know the song, it goes on to say: It pours, man, it pours.
…From my new writing space, all I see is corn, hay, more corn, trees, and more trees. There is a neighbour a km or so away, but I can’t quite make out their house. This is the road less traveled but there is a streetlight across from our home. It’s a little bit of civilization in a pretty remote area.
