Working for the Woman
One of my voice-over clients asked me to consider a full-time job working only for them, late last year. It was flattering but I immediately turned it down. Some people in my circle thought I was nuts.

…We talked about it a hundred times. We’ve been teasing about it via social media. And finally, a podcast featuring Erin Davis and me is out for the world to hear. Gracefully and Frankly, episode one HERE.
…Everyone talks about the many ways we are different. In a deliberately sweeping generalization, Liberals want everything to change and Conservatives want life to go back to the way it was. In this country, we don’t even know why someone’s flying our nation’s flag anymore. Are they showing pride in Canada, or making a political statement?
…There are few things I know for sure. And now, after reading a newsletter from my local garden centre, there’s one less thing.
…My first Dyson vacuum had a name: The Revenge Dyson. When my ex-husband and I broke up, he spent some of his settlement on a Dyson vacuum. While we were married he thought a Dyson was a frivolous expense. Of course he did – he didn’t vacuum!
…We mention gratitude, or its cousin “luck”, in this house every day, never taking our circumstances for granted. It’s Thanksgiving weekend for our friends in the US where being grateful is the order of the day. The challenge: to keep that perspective all year long.
…Memories of my early days in radio are a bit like a game of whack-a-mole. One vivid recollection will pop up and then, months later, that one will have been “whacked” and something else will emerge. She’d never been here, and I was so excited to show her our home turf.
…There’s always something to look forward to in this village!
…One thing the pandemic has taught us is the value of the nation’s workers. Grocery store employees are essential. Nurses and PSWs are indispensable. This causes me to wonder how essential oils were placed in such a category. But I digress.
…The emoji. Some people love them, some hate them, and even the seemingly inoffensive ones are causing problems between generations.
……“Invest in real estate. They’re not making any more of it.”
My Dad
I spent last weekend in Toronto attending the VO North conference; a gathering of voice-over pros and those who want to be.
…As you tour the village, you’ll notice that brightly painted post people stand here and there. The following photos are used with permission from Magical Port Stanley, which is loaded with gorgeous pics from around the village.
…The haunting cries of the mourning dove are echoing through the village. Mornings, evenings – they’re possibly making the most prominent sounds right now.
…It didn’t take long to realize we wouldn’t get any work done on Friday.
…If you’re familiar with Fiverr, I know what you’re thinking. Fiverr. UGH. Cheap rates, cheap clients, ruining the freelance industry – shaking your fist at the sky! I get it, believe me, I felt the same way.
…Listen to the audio version of this post or skip it and read on as usual.
I’ve been sitting with this for a while. Broadcasting sisters message each other. We share stories of the horrors we’ve endured and how we tried to get our managers to do what was right. And how all too often, those managers squelched us. Treated us like we were trying to cause problems. Sent us back into the situation with no new tools to resolve it. No intervention from our so-called “leaders”.
