Inspiring a Love of Reading

We are quick to criticize politicians when things aren’t going well.  Today I want to commend one for doing something right.

Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews is a London MPP.  In fact, I see her office every day, as it’s opposite the Selby Building where Free-FM is housed, on Richmond Street at Piccadilly.  Matthews’ office is on Piccadilly across from our parking lot so whenever there’s a demonstration or a picket set up designed to catch the health ministry’s attention, it takes us about 4 seconds to get there.  But I digress.

For the 9th year, Matthews is running a children’s book drive.  Her office is a drop-off point for kids’ books that will be distributed to children who don’t have books of their own. It’s a wonderful initiative and as Matthews says, if you can’t read or write your options are severely limited. Her office takes this on just because it’s something she believes in and thousands of books come in every year. The neighbouring Oxford Street Book Store puts a discount on all kids’ books during the drive. It’s just a feel-good, do-good idea.

Matthews has a lot on her plate.  Hers is a troubled portfolio in a troubled government. But this is just a nice project with a positive purpose. If you find yourself in London and you have a Hop on Pop or Charlotte’s Web to donate, the drive continues daily until February 5th.

  1. Jack and Max early reader picture books are great as read alouds and for beginning readers. Your children will get to know their new friends Jack and Max and build reading skills through fun rhyme and repetition as they explore the world around them. Come along and join the adventure!

  2. Really liked what you had to say in your post, Inspiring a Love of Reading :, thanks for the good read!
