Ms. Fix-It

Having just recently repaired small holes in a wall and rolled on a fresh coat of paint I was amused by a list I found of everyday items you can substitute for specialty products, like wall filler.

According to the list at www.allyou.com all you need is some white toothpaste.  As long as the wall is painted white.  It doesn’t say whether the paste will take paint but I’m guessing not.

Of course, they recommend white vinegar for everything from cleaning drains to killing weeds. But do you want to remove smudges from wallpaper?  Use a piece of crustless, soft white bread, according to the list.  With all of the bad press bread has gotten in recent years, that might be a better use for it than eating it.  They suggest rubbing a thin veneer of car wax on a stovetop and then removing it to allow future spills to come up more easily. Apparently shaving cream not only cleans a bathroom mirror but helps keep it fog-free for the future. Rubbing extra-virgin olive oil on your skin when you need to remove oil-based paint, if it really works, would be a lot easier on a person than scraping it or using turpentine.

I’m all for saving money but I don’t know that I’ll start wiping my plant leaves with the inside of a banana peel as the list suggests.  Well, maybe once, just out of curiosity. You’ll be able to smell my house before you even enter it.  It’s the one with the minty fresh walls and the fern that smells like a banana.
