Elise’s Last Day

This summer our newsroom grew from 3 to 4 people with the addition of Blackburn London’s paid summer news intern.  That person is Elise Copps-Smith and today is her last day as she goes back to Fanshawe College to finish her course.

I’ve met a lot of interns over the years and all but one from the Fanshawe program have been ready to start work immediately. But none more so than Elise.  She is a very quick study, smart, curious, fearless and willing to do whatever the job takes including trotting down a city street behind two hockey players hauling the Stanley Cup or approaching apathetic strangers in an attempt to elicit a semi-intelligent comment.  It looks and sounds easy if you only see or hear the finished product.  It is not.  Ask our reporter Avery Moore. Her regular assignments range from the mind-numbing boredom of some city council meetings to the bewildering excitement of a stand-off.  And Elise got to experience it all this year.

You will see Elise in some capacity somewhere down the line. Although she dug into the Free-FM news job without hesitation, television is her real love. I predict she will be a TV star of some description whether she hosts her own cooking show (food is a passion) or finds some other niche as she develops as a broadcaster, I think she’s one of those rare people who has “it”. It sure was nice to have the extra hands-on-deck all summer. Best of luck, Elise.  And I hope you’ll take my call when you’re a big star and I’m looking for tickets to your show.
