Muppet with a Cause

As we toured the Titanic exhibit at the Luxor in Las Vegas we couldn’t help but notice an interracial couple among the photographs of passengers who were on board the famous ship. What must life have been like for them back in 1912?  Surely there’s no way they could have escaped prejudicial comments and other foolish and unfair reactions to their different races. I looked at them with awe. They must have been resilient and in love.

Opposition to interracial relationships is so last century now, thankfully. But unfortunately the zealots have moved on to same-sex relationships and marriages. What is this preoccupation some people have with controlling the lives of others?  And why does some indignant grandma in Fort Smith, Arkansas think two men or two women in a relationship have anything to do with her anyway? The whole attitude perplexes me.  But I’d rather have people state their bias outright than lurk around like a night crawler.  And one business in particular now never has to worry about me darkening its doorstep.

I can’t say I’ve ever tried the wares of the US food chain, Chick-fil-a and now I never will. The company’s President, Dan Cathy, says he is staunchly against same-sex marriage and supports “the family”, which is the b.s. lobbed out by people who haven’t bothered to form their own opinion. Cathy’s company has donated millions to church groups that support anti-gay campaigns and I could go on.

Chick-fil-a was about to become the distributor of Jim Henson Co. toys with its kids meal but that company’s President, Lisa Henson (Jim’s daughter) has severed ties with them because of their stance. Henson’s declaration is catching on. Boston’s Mayor has told the company it is not welcome to open a location there.  Celebrities are taking to Twitter to express their disappointment with the chain. And it all started with the people behind the Muppets. I would expect nothing less from a firm that brought us life-long bachelor roommates Bert and Ernie and the interspecies love affair between a frog and a pig.
