A Bit of Local History

One of my brothers-in-law (There are 300, give or take) is the Howie-of-all-trades at Woodeden Camp just outside of London.

Woodeden is one of only two Easter Seals summer camps left in the province. It is a beautiful, sprawling tract of 106 acres donated in 1945 by the Wood family and whose original family cottage remains standing as the main clubhouse.  It does qualify as a cottage, but it is huge.

Large, sprawling stone cottage with leaded, stained glass windows and a drooping-style roof

Lots of people are unaware of this gem primarily because it’s on private property.   We were tickled to get a guided tour on the weekend.  The cottage is magnificent but that’s just the beginning.  The grounds also have a beautiful, new $2 million plus gym that they’re renting out when camp is not in session.  The giant kitchen is to die for.  The camps for kids with disabilities run for 10 days at a time so there are lots of residences and giant outdoor jungle-gym contraption that the kids are hoisted up onto, to build their confidence and let them get some airtime.  There are acres and acres of woodland along the river with coyotes and deer and a huge tree-house. There’s an outdoor amphitheatre and a massive, covered picnic area.  It’s an amazing place made possible by the generosity of thousands of donors.  And to think it all started with one family, so long ago.
